Alejandro Torres, 1900s blog

Watching all of the group presentations in class was a very interesting and valuable experience for me. The presentations focused on important people who had an impact in the United States. These individuals did not necessarily have to be born in the United States, but they had to influence the country in some way. The figures included presidents, singers, bands, scientists, doctors, and other people who helped shape American society. What made the project even more interesting was that the presentations were organized by historical time periods. Each group was assigned a different century to explore. One group presented important figures from the 1700s, another group focused on the 1800s, my group presented about the 1900s, and the final group talked about influential people from the 2000s. This structure helped us understand how different individuals influenced the country at different moments in history.

The group that presented the 1700s focused on figures connected to the early development of the United States. This period is important because it includes the formation of the country and the development of many political ideas that still exist today. The presentation helped show how some leaders helped build the foundation of the United States and shaped early American political systems. Even though this period was a long time ago, many of the ideas that started in the 1700s still influence the country today.

The group that presented the 1800s focused on a time when the United States was growing and changing rapidly. During this century, there were important developments in industry, science, and social reform. Many individuals played key roles in shaping the country during this time. Their presentation showed how the United States continued to evolve politically, socially, and economically. It was interesting to see how different people contributed to those changes and helped move the country forward.

My group presented about important people from the 1900s. I think this was one of the most interesting centuries to study because so many major events and transformations happened during that time. The twentieth century included world wars, civil rights movements, technological innovation, and major cultural changes. Many influential people helped shape modern American society during this period. Some of these figures were political leaders, while others were artists, musicians, scientists, or activists who influenced culture and society in different ways.

During our presentation, I was the second speaker. At the beginning, I felt a little nervous because speaking in front of the class can sometimes be stressful. However, once we started presenting, I felt more comfortable. Our group had divided the work fairly, and everyone knew their part of the presentation. I tried to focus on explaining my section clearly and connecting it to what the first speaker had already discussed. Working as a group made the experience easier because we supported each other and helped create a smooth presentation.

One thing I noticed while watching the other presentations was how different each group’s style was. Some groups focused on detailed explanations and historical facts, while others tried to make their presentations more visual and engaging. I think both approaches can be effective depending on how they are used. When information is presented clearly and supported by visuals, it becomes easier for the audience to understand the topic.

Another aspect that stood out to me was the variety of people that each group included in their presentations. Some groups focused on political leaders, while others highlighted cultural figures such as musicians or artists. This showed that influence in society does not only come from political power. Many people who shape culture, science, and technology also have a powerful impact on society.

The group that presented about the 2000s talked about more recent figures who have influenced American society in the modern world. This presentation felt very relatable because many of the events and people discussed are still part of current conversations. The group explained how modern leaders, innovators, and public figures influence society through technology, media, politics, and global communication. It was interesting to see how influence in the modern era can spread quickly through digital platforms and global networks.

Another important element of the presentations was the use of visuals and images. Many groups included pictures of the people they were discussing, which helped make the presentations more engaging. Visuals can make it easier for the audience to connect with the information being presented. When you see the faces of historical figures or images connected to important events, it helps make the story feel more real.

Watching all of the presentations also helped me reflect on my own performance. When you are presenting, your main focus is remembering what you want to say and making sure you explain your part clearly. But once the presentation is over, you begin to think about ways you could improve. For example, I realized that speaking a little slower and making more eye contact with the audience could help make the presentation even more effective. These small improvements can make a big difference in how confident and clear a speaker appears.

Presentations like this also help develop important skills beyond just learning historical information. They help students practice communication, teamwork, and organization. Preparing a presentation requires research, collaboration, and planning. During the presentation, students also practice public speaking, which is an important skill in many professional situations.

Another positive aspect of the project was that it allowed us to learn from each other. Instead of only reading about historical figures in a textbook, we were able to hear different explanations and perspectives from our classmates. Sometimes hearing a concept explained by another student can make it easier to understand because they might present the idea in a different way.

Overall, I really enjoyed the experience of both presenting and watching the other groups. Even though preparing and delivering a presentation can feel challenging, it is also a valuable learning experience. The project helped me understand how many different types of people have influenced the United States throughout history. It also showed that influence can come from many areas, including politics, music, science, medicine, technology, and culture.

In the end, I believe the presentations were a great activity for the class. They encouraged collaboration, discussion, and learning in a way that felt interactive rather than passive. By studying influential figures from different centuries, we were able to see how history develops over time and how individuals can leave a lasting impact on society. For me personally, the experience helped build my confidence in speaking in front of others and gave me a deeper appreciation for the many people who have shaped the United States throughout history.
